How to close a crack on the toilet bowl

Hello, there is a problem with the toilet bowl, a small crack has formed. Visually, the water does not flow, but the tank is all wet. Tell me how to close the crack and prevent further destruction?

Answer

Repairing a leaking toilet bowl is complicated by the fact that in this case you have to deal with the smallest cracks, and not broken pieces. In other words, applying a layer of glue to mating surfaces is extremely difficult, and in most cases completely impossible. The only way out is not to restore the integrity of the container with water, but to seal the defective place.

It is not difficult to create a durable surface layer using modern materials. The main difficulty lies in the fact that the tank experiences constant alternating temperature loads. For this reason, seemingly good and durable materials such as epoxy resin and cold welding are useless in this case. At first, they will “keep” flowing, but over time, the tank will begin to leak - it’s all about the different coefficients of thermal expansion of porcelain and composite materials.

Aquarium silicone sealant and a composition for repairing car windows are best suited for closing cracks. Quite good results are shown by cyanoacryl reinforced with ordinary baking soda. Only it is necessary to use not glue, but a more plastic gel. Before applying the composition, the crack is treated with fine sandpaper - this will increase adhesion. After this, the place along the split should be degreased with solvent (an inexpensive B-646 is suitable). The adhesive mixture is applied in several layers, with an intermediate drying of each of them. They begin to use plumbing only after the glue has completely dried.
