Installing the mixer on board the bath + an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of this option

In a modern bathroom, spacious or very small, it is no longer enough just to rationally place all the necessary elements. The requirements for a combination of style and comfort are constantly growing. Therefore, installing a mixer on board the bathroom is becoming more popular.

Advantages of this type of installation

Mounting the mixer to the wall has a long history. In the tiny bathrooms of the so-called "Khrushchev" and other small-sized apartments, such a solution was quite appropriate, since it saved space and money.

Sufficient installation height of the mixer above the bathtub in combination with a long spout allows using the same device both for the bathtub and for the washbasin located nearby.

Stylish and functional faucet on board the bath will be a real decoration of the bathroom

After a couple of decades, a competitor appeared on the wall mixer, which was mounted directly on the side. It should be noted that such a mixer installation in the bathroom has several advantages:

  • provides quick filling of the bath;
  • allows to avoid splashes;
  • optimizes the space of the bathroom;
  • provides ample opportunities for interior design;
  • differs in the increased convenience in operation;
  • makes it possible to mask the shower hose.

As a result, the bathroom becomes as comfortable as possible and at the same time very beautiful and stylish. Cascading faucets, which are stylized as a small waterfall and can fill the bathtub in a matter of minutes, give a special chic to the interior design.

Please note: The wider spout diameter increases the load on the mixer design. In addition, the shower hose, which is located under the bathtub, wears out faster than usual. Therefore, choosing a mixer on board the bath, you should pay close attention not only to the design of the device, but also to its strength, resistance to wear, etc.

Before you do - think!

Before you start installing the mixer in the bathroom, you must also get acquainted with the disadvantages of devices designed for installation on the side. Since not only certain advantages exist with such an installation. It should be remembered that due to increased operating loads, the likelihood of malfunctions in such structures is quite high. Professionals recommend installing in such a way as to provide access to the hidden part of the structure, for example, using a removable raised panel.

Another problem that almost inevitably arises with mortise mixers is the need to change the shower hose frequently. In some cases, this element fails after a couple of months after installation, since the hose hidden behind the collar is in a bent state. There is no single solution to this problem.Owners are advised to choose a hose of the highest possible quality and reconcile with the need for its frequent replacement.

Installation steps and features

For a professional plumber, installing a mixer on an acrylic bath is a matter of literally one or two hours.

But the novice master, who decided to put the mixer on his own, may need much more time to complete all the operations. A good help will be the recommendations of experienced craftsmen on how to install a faucet in the bathroom.

Installing the mixer on board the bath

An experienced master will cope with the installation of a mortise mixer in a couple of hours

To begin with, you should study the device of the bathroom faucet, since the installation of the popular single lever mixer is somewhat different from the installation of a traditional valve design. Before starting work, stock up on the necessary tools and materials:

  • a drill;
  • milling nozzle;
  • a screwdriver;
  • adjustable wrench;
  • flexible hoses;
  • fasteners.

Attention: At home, the hole can only be made on the side of the bathtub made of acrylic or similar composite materials. Holes on cast iron and steel bathrooms should be made exclusively in the factory to avoid chips of enamel and further corrosion of the structure.

To install the mortise mixer, you must:

  1. Choose a suitable place and make markings on the side of the bath.
  2. Drill a hole of a suitable diameter with an electric drill, on which a nozzle with a crown mill is installed.
  3. Place a special gasket under the mixer, which is supplied with the device.
  4. Insert the mixer into the hole.
  5. Fix the mixer under the side. For single lever structures, a special stud should be used, which is then secured with a steel half-washer. In addition, one or more fixing nuts are used.
  6. Tighten the mixer firmly to the surface of the bath edge.
  7. Connect flexible hoses that provide hot and cold water to the mixer. For hose washers, special gaskets should be used.

Manufacturers of mortise type mixers often offer special mounting panels in addition to the basic design.

The need for their application is motivated by the fact that when creating a hole in the side of the bathroom there is a violation of its rigidity, and the mounting panel or bar will allow you to strengthen the mounting location.

Choosing a place for the mixer on board the bath, it is necessary to provide access to the structure in case of repair

In practice, wizards often do without this additional element. Often, the mounting plate is not suitable in size, requires trimming. In addition, it is difficult to apply this element on a rounded configuration. However, if there is any doubt that the bath will withstand the load with reduced stiffness of the side, you should consult an experienced specialist on this issue.

      I somehow doubt that such a mixer can be made easily accessible. Usually they are mounted along the back wall of the bathtub, as in your picture, so no false panel will help. If something fails (after a couple of months), you will have to move the entire bath to get to the malfunction.

      Frankly, I don’t like this type of mixer installation. Perhaps, of course, this is a matter of habit and it is worth trying something new for yourself. For me, the main advantage, first of all, is practicality and durability.To drill, not even a big hole in the bath, I will certainly be sorry. Therefore, I prefer other methods.
