Acrylic insert (insert) into the bathroom: a description of the installation technology

Overhaul of the bathroom, which is usually understood as a change in plumbing, involves a serious expenditure of effort, time and money. It so happens that it is impossible to carry it out, and the appearance of the old bath leaves much to be desired. In such cases, resort to restoration assistance. There are many ways to restore enamel and all of them, as a rule, take a lot of time and are very laborious. For those who want to get an excellent result in the shortest possible time, a technology has been created to install an acrylic liner in the bath, which allows you to enjoy the updated equipment, literally, a couple of hours after the start of work.

“Bath to bath”: what is it?

The technology of restoration of old plumbing, very popular around the world, involves the use of a special insert. A special acrylic insert in the bath is installed and fixed with glue in the old cast-iron structure, which is used as a kind of frame.

Make a liner from a two-layer durable polymer. For the top layer, acrylic is used, which has excellent performance characteristics. The bottom is a special elastic plastic that can withstand large bending loads.

Acrylic bath insert - practical and comfortable

Acrylic liner allows you to get almost a new bath without dismantling the old design

The finished structural element has a thickness of 4 to 6 mm and can be performed in almost any color. What is especially nice, the acrylic liners in the bath are practical and do not require special care. They are washed with the most ordinary soap, resist dirt and rust. Scratches that appear on the surface can be easily removed with special polishing agents. The only enemies of such a surface are abrasive products and aggressive substances.

Why is it profitable to use such technology?

According to statistics, plastic inserts are becoming very popular, it is easy to explain their significant advantages:

  • Full installation will take about two hours, the next day the equipment can already be used.
  • A bathtub with an inner liner is much stronger than acrylic, because the walls of the old cast-iron structure act as a reliable frame.
  • All the advantages of an acrylic bath are preserved: antibacterial effect, heat is excellently retained, impact resistance, heat resistance, ease of care.
  • Dismantling of old equipment is not required.
  • The life of the updated plumbing will be about 20 years.
  • Affordable prices for plastic constructions.

How to choose the right liner?

To begin the process of restoration of an old bath, you need to select the insert. In order not to be mistaken, it is necessary to make measurements with special care, which determine the size of the liner. To determine the width and length at the top, the inside of the bath is measured. Bottom measurements may not be accurate due to different equipment configurations.Depth is determined in the area of the lower drain hole. Based on these measurements, a plastic insert in the bath is selected that fully complies with all the necessary parameters.

Plastic insert in the bath: measure

Properly performed measurements - a guarantee of the correct selection of acrylic liner: D1 - outer length; D2 - internal length; Ch - depth from the side; Ш1 - width at the discharge; Ш2 - width at the feet

Steps for mounting an acrylic insert

The installation technology is quite simple, so it can be done independently.

Before starting the installation, you should prepare a special tool for fixing the liner inside the old bath. This is a special two-component foam, which can be purchased upon purchase of the insert.

Installation of acrylic liners in the bath begins with surface preparation. The edges of the old design must be completely free, since a new surface will be glued to them. If tile or any other decor is closed, it is necessary to partially dismantle the coating.

Then, with the help of a coarse-grained emery cloth, the enamel of the old bath is cleaned. The operation should be performed very carefully. The resulting rough surface will enable the liner to adhere as firmly as possible due to improved adhesion of the cleaned surface. After cleaning, the dirt is thoroughly washed off and a siphon is removed. The bathtub is ready for installation.

Specialists who tell you how to install the liner in the bath always pay special attention to the fitting process. You should start from the edges. To do this, the insert is placed in the bathtub, outlined around the perimeter with a pencil, removed and excess plastic is cut off with a jigsaw. Then an overflow and drain hole is planned. To mark them on the insert, in the old bath, the holes are rubbed with a simple pencil, the insert placed inside is pressed to the location of the sinks. According to the print, the center is determined and holes are drilled with the crown of the desired diameter.

Actually installing the liner in the bath is to fix it inside the old structure. For this, a sealant is applied on top of the perimeter of the bath and around the drain holes so that moisture does not penetrate the space between the walls and the insert. The entire remaining surface of the structure is carefully filled with foam. It must be applied in a continuous coating, otherwise the acrylic in the places of the passage will bend, and cracks may appear. The insert is put in place and pressed firmly against the bath. A siphon is installed immediately, the screws that hold it in place will help to glue the liner in a good quality.

Installing the liner in the bath: the final step

After installing the liner, the bath is filled with water and left for a day

In conclusion, water is collected in the bath. Its level should not reach two fingers to the overflow hole.

Foam under the influence of the load will not be able to lift the plastic insert up, which guarantees its high-quality gluing. After a day, the bath is ready for use.

What if you need to dismantle the liner?

If you need to dismantle such an insert, then you can see how this is done on this instruction:

The restored equipment very successfully combines the advantages of an acrylic and cast-iron bathtub. A similar result is obtained during restoration by the method of "pouring" acrylic. However, when choosing a "liner or bulk bath", it is worth considering that the installation of the insert can be done independently, while the second option is likely to require a professional installation. In any case, a quickly and efficiently restored bath will delight for a long time with its appearance and excellent performance.

Faced with an acrylic liner on my own experience, in the new apartment we just had a terrible-looking bathtub. But they didn’t want to change it, since it was cast iron, and this is a durable material, it was just necessary to update the surface of the bathtub. Among the various options, the main one to which we were more inclined was an acrylic liner. We finally decided to dwell on it when we found out that the cost compared to other coating options is much less. Special masters were called for these purposes, and in the first months they were completely satisfied. But after six months, the insert began to peel off, and now the insert bends under weight, and plays, we think to redo it.
