Sewer pipe cleaning: analysis of the most effective methods

If the house has sewage, then blockages in it are almost inevitable. They arise for various reasons and are eliminated by various methods. In any case, if the sewage has stopped leaving the house, it is necessary to clean the sewer pipes. Methods for eliminating blockages range from the use of a conventional plunger to the use of sophisticated professional equipment. Today we suggest you figure out which method is best to use.

Why are sewer pipes clogged?

Even the most accurate housewife is not immune from the occurrence of congestion in the sewer. It may arise due to reasons such as:

  • accumulation of body fat;
  • siltation of sewer pipes;
  • getting into the sewer pieces of fabric;
  • deposits on the walls of pipes of sediment of calcium, rust, etc.

These are the so-called operational and mechanical congestion. To eliminate them, sometimes it is enough to dissolve or destroy the substances accumulated in the sewer system.

In addition, technological congestion arising due to the condition of the pipeline is distinguished. The reason for this congestion may be:

  • wear of sewer equipment;
  • improper system design;
  • excessive number of turns of the pipeline;
  • small diameter sewer pipes, etc.

To cope with these kinds of problems, large-scale restoration work may be required. Especially dangerous for sewage is garbage such as animal hair and hair. These are very durable substances, it can be extremely difficult to remove the cork formed from them.

If atypical noise comes from the sewage system or unpleasant odors appear, this may be the first sign of clogging. The use of special household chemicals will help prevent the problem.

Using plunger and plumbing cable

Solving the question of how to clean the sewer pipe, many housewives and owners turn to such a simple and ingenious device as a plunger. It is installed above the drain hole and several times vigorously pump air into the sewer. As a result of such mechanical action, the blockage is destroyed. Then you need to turn on the water, which will wash away the remnants of accumulated debris.

Before using the plunger, it is recommended to close the overflow hole with a cover or rag. Otherwise, it will not be possible to provide a sufficiently high air pressure in the system, and the use of a plunger will be ineffective. Sometimes you need to use a plunger several times to achieve the desired result.

Plunger for clearing a blockage in the sewer

The plunger is the most common mechanical tool for cleaning the blockage in the sewer. It must be pressed firmly to the drain hole and several times vigorously push

If a blockage forms deep in the pipes, the plunger may not be able to cope with it. Then the owner of the house will have to arm himself with another popular hand tool - a cable.

Special cable for cleaning sewer pipe is a dense steel spring several meters long. For ease of use, a handle is attached to one end of the cable, and a number of different attachments can be used for the other end.

When cleaning, the cable is lowered into the sewer hole until it reaches a blockage. Then the device begins to rotate in order to mechanically destroy the resulting obstacle.

Sewer cleaning cable

The cable for cleaning the sewer is successfully used to eliminate dirt and debris accumulated at a depth of several meters. Nozzles allow you to use this device even more efficiently

If maximum effort is required to eliminate accumulated contaminants, turn the cable clockwise. When rotating in the opposite direction, the spring may open and the cable will be damaged.

The use of household chemicals

Effective cleaning of sewer pipes is also successfully carried out using special gels or powders. You only need to carefully read the instructions and follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly. Typically, the procedure is to pour the powder or pour the gel into the drain hole and wait a while.

If, after the time specified by the manufacturer, the accumulated water does not begin to decrease, use a plunger. A few energetic movements will help eliminate blockage that has already been exposed to chemicals.

If such tools for quick cleaning of sewer pipes for some reason are not available, you can use substances that can be easily found in any kitchen. The easiest option: pour a couple of liters of boiling water into the drain hole. Sometimes this is enough to dissolve the fat plug. Anyway, as a preventive measure against operational blockages, it is recommended that every time after washing very oily dishes, pour boiling water into the sewer. Grease will be more effectively washed off the walls of the sewer pipe and the likelihood of clogging will be significantly reduced.

Soda to eliminate blockage in the sewer

Conventional baking soda allows you to create an alkaline environment in the pipes, dissolves blockages and disinfects the piping from the inside. It is also used in combination with vinegar, salt and other substances.

There are several recipes on how to clean a clogged sewer pipe with soda. Ordinary baking soda is effectively used in combination with vinegar, salt and other substances.

Soda and boiling water

Procedure:

  1. First you need to pour into the sewer about a liter of boiling water.
  2. After a quarter of an hour, try to clean the drain with a plunger.
  3. Then pour a glass of baking soda and pour three more glasses of boiling water.

If necessary, this procedure can be repeated several times. An alkaline medium is formed in the sewer, which will not only dissolve the blockage, but also disinfect the walls of the sewer pipes.

Soda and salt

Procedure:

  1. Baking soda and sodium chloride are mixed in equal proportions, for example, in half a glass.
  2. The mixture is poured into the drain hole.
  3. Pour about 1 liter of boiling water.

After this, you need to let the mixture work for about 8-12 hours. Sewerage is not recommended during this period.

Soda and Vinegar

Procedure:

  1. First, half a glass of soda is poured into the drain hole.
  2. Then pour about the same amount of vinegar.
  3. The drain hole is closed with a stopper.
  4. After about two hours, approximately a liter of boiling water is poured into the sewer.

Please note that when alkali (soda) and acid (vinegar) are combined, a large amount of foam is formed and carbon dioxide is released.

Professional help for complex blockages

In most cases, the above methods are effective, but this is not always the case. If you failed to solve the problem on your own, it's time to invite experts.To begin with, they will conduct a video diagnostics of the state of the sewer system, at the same time finding out not only the place and nature of the blockage, but also the general condition of the pipeline. Then one of the methods will be applied, such as:

  • a hydrodynamic method in which a high-pressure jet of water is supplied to the sewer;
  • thermochemical cleaning using special means heated to a high temperature;
  • Pneumohydroimpulse sewage treatment by transmission of high power second pulse exposure through the system.

Thanks to modern equipment, brigades cope with blockage in the shortest possible time.

      Near 2 cafes in Yerevan. I order a professional Trublon staff - 20 liter cans last for 6 months exactly for both cafes. Cleans perfectly, removes the smell from the pipes, too. I can recommend on my own. Before I found this thing, I also suffered, I tried everything.

      At home from my grandmother there were two plumbing cables of different diameters. With any clog they cope perfectly. But in order to carry out the "maneuver", it is necessary to disconnect the siphon from the pipe (which would also be nice to rinse), drain the water, clean it, and then return all the parts to their place. The process is laborious and lengthy. I want quick solutions, but, often, not a single household chemical product that is so well advertised and promises a 100% result, alas, in fact, does not cope with blockages. I took a note of soda from your article. Honestly, I did not know about such an application. I will definitely try it.
