Do-it-yourself water filter for cleaning well and borehole water

Do-it-yourself water filter for cleaning well and borehole water

The problem of drinking water purification becomes relevant not only for citizens, but also for residents of rural areas. To make water from a well or well suitable for drinking, you can make a water filter yourself.

Why filter well water?

It would seem that it could be cleaner than the well water sung in ancient Russian epics? Alas, modern reality is not at all like a fairy tale. Water in private wells can be contaminated with a variety of substances, such as:

  • nitrates;
  • bacteria and pathogens;
  • impurities that degrade the taste and quality of drinking water.

For an excess of nitrates in drinking water, that is, salts of nitric acid, one should “thank” the farmers who widely use fertilizers and pesticides in growing agricultural products. Some of these substances inevitably seep into the aquifer.

Bacteria and other dangerous microorganisms appear in wells and boreholes, since sanitary and hygienic standards in the construction of cesspools and dung pits, toilets and other similar structures are often not followed as strictly as they should.

The easiest filter

The simplest filter can be made from a plastic bottle with a filler

Poor quality and equipment damage lead to an admixture of sand rust in the water, etc. Drinking such water is simply unpleasant. Therefore, for giving it is recommended to buy or make at least a simple water filter.

Overview of filtration materials

The principle of the filter is simple and familiar to everyone. It is necessary to pass water through a layer of filtration material. The filler may be different:

  • the cloth;
  • cotton wool;
  • paper napkins;
  • gauze;
  • sand;
  • grass;
  • coal;
  • lutraxil.

Filters from gauze, cotton wool, paper towels, fabrics and other similar materials are quite effective, but short-lived. They need to be changed often enough. However, as a temporary option, they are quite suitable.

Charcoal for a homemade filter

Charcoal can be bought at the store or made independently

For regular use, other materials are used, mainly charcoal. It is laid in layers, alternating with sand, gravel, grass, etc. Lutraksil is a synthetic material made from polypropylene fibers.

Tip: Charcoal can be made independently. For this, pieces of wood need only be calcined in a metal container. Softwood is not suitable for this. Ready-made charcoal is sold in stores, in picnic goods departments.

The simplest plastic bottle filter

The use of ordinary household filters for a small cottage is rarely convenient. Such devices require water from the water supply at a certain pressure, and not at any cottage there is a water supply in suitable characteristics. Pitcher filters purify water too slowly.

In addition, you have to constantly change cartridges.Therefore, a homemade water filter made from a plastic bottle and a bucket with a plastic lid may be the most acceptable option.

Homemade water filter

A homemade water filter can be made from a regular plastic bottle

DIY water filter

In this filter, coal and ordinary cloth napkins are used as filler

The simplest filter for a summer residence is made in this way:
1. The bottom of a plastic bottle needs to be cut.
2. Cut a suitable hole in the plastic bucket lid.
3. Insert the bottle into the hole with the neck down.
4. Fill the filter with filler.

Tip: It is important to ensure that the bottle is firmly attached to the edges of the hole made in the lid of the bucket. To do this, sand the edges of the hole with sandpaper and use a rubber gasket.

Using the same principle, you can make a more convenient filtration unit. A plastic canister or tank of approximately 20 liters is used as the receiving container. At the bottom you need to make a hole and insert a small faucet through it, through which purified water will flow.

On top of the receiving tank you need to install a plastic bottle of 10 liters, in the bottom of which a filling hole has been made. For the manufacture of the filter, you can use a piece of polypropylene pipe 40 mm. The top and bottom of the pipe are covered with pieces of perforated plastic, which is recommended to be fixed with hot-melt adhesive. The pipe is filled with charcoal.

Such a homemade filter should fit tightly into the neck of a standard ten-liter bottle. It remains to connect the receiving tank with a filter and a bottle. You can immediately fill the installation with a full bucket of well water, which will be filtered out after a few hours. Thus, the house will always have a supply of clean drinking water.

Please note: Rinse the carbon filter before using it. To do this, several liters of water are passed through it, which is immediately drained. As a result, small particles of coal that can pollute the water will be removed.

Three-bulb design for complete water supply

Happy owners of a full-fledged water supply system in a private house can make a three-bulb home-made filter for water purification. To do this, you need:

  1. Purchase three identical flasks.
  2. Connect the flasks in series with two quarter-inch nipple adapters. In this case, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the in / out notation in order to observe the direction of water movement. The threads of the nipples should be sealed with an FUM tape.
  3. The extreme openings of the flasks are attached to the tube a quarter of an inch using straight adapters.
  4. Connect the filtration system to the water supply with a tee, which is cut into the water supply using a 1/2 ”connector.
  5. At the outlet, a standard faucet for drinking water is connected to the filter system.
  6. Fill flasks with filter material. You can use a polypropylene cartridge, charcoal filter and filler from scale.

Cartridges for filters are very diverse and can eliminate a wide variety of water pollution. It is worth noting that the cost of such a do-it-yourself construction may not be much lower than an inexpensive filtration unit from the manufacturer.

      Tamara, you argue so, as if the water is horribly dirty and harmful to our precious health.Yes, everywhere it is different, but you can, in the end, boil it or defend it. The filter in some cases also cannot be a panacea. The author gave a thorough description of the home-made filter, why not make it? I remembered how the very first home filter was also made of plastic one and a half cups, I punched several thin holes in a cork, and put a piece of cotton in this cork. One or two tablets of activated carbon were wrapped in cotton. And the bottle down with its neck in a jar. Primitive, but the water was clear.

      If 20-30 years ago we drank quite calmly water from wells, considering it clean, now, indeed, there is no clear water on Earth. Somewhere I read that pure water on earth ended about 15 years ago. For this we must be grateful to ourselves. Therefore, now in order to avoid poisoning, we are forced to recreate clean water. Such disposable filters, which are given at the beginning of the article, can serve, in my opinion, only an emergency option. Even in the country, the filtering problem needs to be taken more seriously. And it is better not to stint and put a normal filter, which will filter drinking water separately. And for sanitary needs can be used from a tap or from a well. Myself, you know, is more expensive.
