How to cover cracks in the slate on the roof

Hello. The other day I found on the roof several damaged sheets of slate, because of which the roof began to leak and a dirty spot appeared on the ceiling. Tell me, is there a reliable way that you can repair cracks in slate?

Oleg.

Answer

Good afternoon, Oleg!

Slate is a rather brittle material and in some cases can crack even in the absence of mechanical loads - due to temperature changes, due to deflection of sheets during installation, etc. If impact was applied to the sheet, then damage cannot be avoided. Fortunately for you, craftsmen have come up with several effective ways to repair slate sheets and now we will talk about the most popular.

  1. In case of significant damage, parts of the sheet can be bonded with epoxy. To do this, the inside of the damaged area is glued with duct tape, and a patch of fiberglass is applied on the outside, which is pre-impregnated with an “epoxy”.
  2. Small holes and cracks are localized using a patch of galvanized sheet, which is mounted on the surface with bituminous mastic or liquid rubber (sold in the same tubes as silicone sealant).
  3. Damage is blown out with foam. The hardened material is cut flush and covered with a layer of roofing mastic or liquid rubber.
  4. Straight, even cracks can be localized with butyl rubber tape - it has high adhesion to any material, so it will provide excellent adhesion and sealing.
  5. A universal method is to seal a crack with a special mixture of asbestos, cement, PVA glue and water. The first two components are mixed in a ratio of 3: 1, and then glue is added, previously diluted with water in a ratio of 1 to 1. Before using the mixture, a stucco grid (sickle) is glued to the damaged area, after which the prepared solution is evenly distributed over the surface.

As you can see, there are many ways to eliminate the leak of slate blood. You just have to choose the right one and get down to business.
