How to choose a place for a fireplace in the house so that there is good traction?

Hello. We are building our own house with my wife and decided to realize their dream: to put a real wood-burning fireplace. Experience in construction, in principle, is, but not as a stove maker. Therefore, I want to ask about some of the nuances, so as not to redo it later. The main thing in any fireplace is good traction. This, in fact, is the question: where and how is it better to put a fireplace in the house so that it burns normally?

Good draft largely depends on the correct installation of the chimney, but it is still worth connecting a person with experience installing fireplaces or stoves. As an aid, we can recommend an article on our website about different types of chimneys for fireplaces.

But you can choose a place yourself. There are a couple of nuances that affect traction. And if they are not taken into account, then combustion problems will arise unambiguously. Especially if you are creating a fireplace with an open firebox.

Choosing a place in the room

Typically, fireplaces are located in common rooms, such as living rooms, halls, because they have enough space for normal combustion of the furnace. The minimum size of a room with a fireplace should be 20 squares. Less is impossible.

Do not mount the hearth with a fit to the outer wall, which has direct contact with the street. In this case, in the winter there may be problems with the functioning of the chimney.

There is no place for a fireplace opposite a window or door, because an open firebox + an open window = a draft. Moreover, it can blow both into the furnace and give back thrust. The same effect will occur if you mount the structure in the end wall, which is located between the side walls with openings to the street (window or door). If one of the adjacent walls is dull, then you can put a fireplace at the end.

Place for the fireplace

An ideal place for a fireplace is a large room with two blank walls, one of which is located behind the hearth, and the second is adjacent to it

It is not recommended to mount wood furnaces in rooms that are too far from the roof ridge. You will have to highly understand the chimney pipe, which on the outside does not look very impressive. The excess protruding element is knocked out of the general view of the roof and often spoils the appearance of the building.

Features of the "right" interior

Equally important for good traction is the interior design of the room. So, modern houses today are so airtight, thanks to double-glazed windows and high-quality, with good door seals, that they absolutely do not provide an influx of fresh air. In such rooms, fireplaces smoke, burn weakly and unstably. To strengthen the traction, it is necessary to keep the doors open or open the window for the duration of combustion (at least for ventilation).

Some owners do not even put doors in the fireplace room, replacing them with arches, or cut the door leaf from below so that there is a slight slit for air flow.

Corner fireplace

Corner fireplaces are less afraid of drafts, because air flows pass by them, and if you put a closed firebox, the back draft problem will be solved

If you carefully consider a place for installing a fireplace, consider that fifty percent good traction is provided to you.
