Choosing a tank for the water supply system

What expansion tank is better to buy for a water supply system if the house is not heated in winter and the water from the water supply is drained for the winter? Two people live in the house, sometimes three people, there is a shower, toilet, washing machine, faucet in the kitchen.

Tatyana! If you mean a hydraulic accumulator of a pumping station by an expansion tank of a water supply system, then in your case you can use both a tank made of stainless steel and an ordinary steel tank painted with enamel.

The fact is that with a serviceable membrane (pear), which is located inside the accumulator, the metal does not come into contact with water. Unlike storage water heaters, draining water from the tank for the winter will not affect the process of corrosion. Of course, the stainless steel capacity will be more durable, but its cost is much higher, so the final decision is yours.

If you decide to install a cheaper tank made of so-called ferrous metal, we recommend immediately replacing its connecting flange with one made of stainless steel. These parts are exposed to aggressive moisture and often corrode right through, so manufacturers supply them to retail chains separately. The flanges are unified and suitable for household accumulators of any model.

Finally, I would like to recall the need to check the pressure in the air chamber of the accumulator before filling the system with water. Manufacturers recommend maintaining this parameter in the range of 1.5–1.8 atm.

As for the volume of the tank, the frequency of turning on the pump and the required water supply in case of a power outage depends on its size. With unsystematic use of the water supply, a 25-liter tank will suffice - the water will not stagnate. If you need a water supply system daily, then a tank of 50-100 liters can be considered the best option.
