Geranium at home: a dangerous enemy or a harmless plant?

Geranium is a surprisingly beautiful, lushly flowering plant. But many advise not to keep it at home. Why? There are both superstitious and rational reasons.
Superstition about geranium
Oddly enough, most will accept about geraniums quite positive. It is believed that the flower is able to protect against love spell, improve the atmosphere in the family, and also contribute to falling in love. There is a sign that a pink flower on a geranium blossoms at the moment when one of the family members falls in love or is about to marry. Therefore, superstitious parents, hoping to persuade one of the children to marry, often brought pink geraniums.
But despite such a positive effect on heart affairs, blame for the illnesses of the male half of the family is often blamed on this flower. It is believed that geranium cannot be wound up in a house where there is more than one man - she will bring them all to the grave. Some, on the contrary, argue that if there is only one man in the house, then he will have a more powerful blow from the insidious flower. Superstitious people like to tell stories that a certain woman remained a widow several times, and all because of geraniums on the windowsill.
A less cruel version of this superstition suggests that geraniums do not kill men, but simply drive them away from the mistress of the house. Say, the flower is jealous, and therefore does not want the hostess to give her love to someone else. Why in this case the geranium does not destroy neighboring plants or the dog’s beloved dog’s pet dog is not clear.
Rational reasons not to keep geraniums at home
Geranium should be wary of allergy sufferers. Lush flowers secrete a lot of pollen, which is a strong allergen. Therefore, before buying a plant, it is better to take a test with an allergist - just in case.
Another reason you can refuse to buy geraniums is its toxicity to cats. If you have a pet, it can be poisoned by geranium leaves. Therefore, either think in advance where to put the flower so that the cat does not reach it, or refuse to buy at all. If your pet tasted geraniums, it may show symptoms:
- vomiting
- decreased or complete loss of appetite;
- lethargy, decreased mobility.
If you notice them, immediately bring the animal to the veterinarian. Procrastination can be fatal for a cat.
Signs and superstitions are ambiguous about geraniums. Some argue that she helps in love, while others, on the contrary, attribute to her the property of driving away potential lovers.
