Waste engine oil furnace: design options + DIY example

Among the options for autonomous heating of premises, the most interesting can be called a special type of potbelly stove in which used oil is used. Make working furnace Doing it yourself is not difficult, since the design is relatively simple, and the tools and materials necessary for work are quite affordable. When operating the unit, special problems also usually do not arise. The main advantage, of course, is saving, because what can be cheaper than used oil?

The principle of operation of such a stove
In such stoves, the combustion process occurs twice, i.e. it will be necessary to equip two combustion chambers. In the first chamber, the used oil burns slowly, with the formation of combustible vapors. They enter the second chamber, where they are mixed with air. This gas-combustible mixture burns in the second chamber, and generates a significant amount of heat, heating up to very high temperatures.

In a self-made waste oil furnace, combustion processes occur at fairly high temperatures. The unit is considered quite safe, but it is not recommended to put it on a draft
In order for a home-made oil-based furnace to work correctly, it is necessary to provide air in both the first and second chambers. Where mining is burned out, a control damper is needed, since the amount of air entering here must be moderate. In order to provide air to the second chamber, usually in a pipe connecting the two sections, a series of holes with a diameter of about 10 mm are made.
Autonomous heating can be provided by assembling the boiler with waste oil. You will find detailed installation instructions in our next article:https://aquatech.tomathouse.com/en/otoplenie/kotly/kotel-na-otrabotannom-masle.html.
Types of makeshift designs
According to the type of design of the furnace, the development can be divided into three types:
- homemade units made of sheet metal or gas cylinder;
- supercharged structures;
- drip fuel models.
The first option is a very simple device that craftsmen who own the skills of working with a welding machine, make independently. To do this, use a sufficiently thick sheet metal, metal pipes, etc. The use of a gas cylinder allows a significant reduction in operating time. In the already used cylinder, gas residues may well be present. When cutting off the upper part, there is a danger of a small explosion. To avoid this, it is recommended to pump water into the container and only after that start dismantling.
For a supercharged furnace, an additional fan will be required. Do this in such a way that the main air flow falls on the second chamber. This ensures high-quality combustion of the fuel, and also contributes to a uniform and fast distribution of the received heat in the room.

Depending on the design in the waste oil furnace, conventional convection, an air heat exchanger or water heating in the boiler can be used
Making a drip fuel supply yourself is quite difficult. Usually, industrial models complete this element. This can significantly save waste oil consumption. Industrial units are efficient, compact, safe and relatively inexpensive. However, there are also home-made models that combine both a drip oil supply system and a boost.

Making a gas cylinder stove
Making a sheet metal stove is not difficult. To do this, cook two combustion chambers, attach legs to the bottom. Then they are connected by a pipe with holes, a vertical chimney pipe is mounted on the upper combustion chamber, etc. However, all these operations require quite lengthy welding operations. To reduce them, craftsmen successfully use gas cylinders. These containers have thick enough walls to ensure both fire safety of the structure and its long service life.
Regardless of whether a cylinder or sheet metal is used to make the furnace, a number of rules should be followed when creating a design. They need to be considered when figuring out how to make a furnace with used oil.
- The air supply to the first combustion chamber must be made adjustable. For this, a conventional shutter is suitable, which can be opened slightly so that a gap of arbitrary sizes remains.
- The chamber into which the used oil is fed for combustion is always made collapsible so that it can be easily cleaned.
- The chimney must be strictly vertical, horizontal or inclined sections are not allowed.
- To ensure good traction, the length of the chimney should be at least four meters.
There are various options for the use of the cylinder in the manufacture of the furnace for development. The simplest one is as follows:
- From the cylinder, you need to cut off the upper and lower parts.
- From the resulting halves, a collapsible combustion chamber for oil is made.
- Metal legs are welded to the bottom.
- A hole is made in the upper part of the first chamber, into which a piece of pipe with an adjustment plate is mounted. Through this opening, an adjustable air flow as well as fuel will be supplied.
- A hole is also made in the center to which a piece of pipe is welded connecting both combustion chambers.
- A series of air holes are made in this pipe.
- From the middle part of the container and sheet metal, a secondary combustion chamber is made, which is also welded to the connecting pipe.
- At the last stage, a chimney is made and installed.
To easily give the oven the correct position on an uneven surface, it is recommended to make legs that can be adjusted in height.
A lot of useful recommendations for the manufacture of a stove for development is contained in the video material:
Often, recommendations for the manufacture of furnaces for mining do not have exact dimensions. They are not of great need, since the construction is easy to adjust.
This is the easiest way to use a gas cylinder to create such a heater. The following diagram shows a more sophisticated working garage stove. It used a gas cylinder, while a boost system and a drip fuel supply were installed.

This is an option of manufacturing a rather complex furnace for working out of a gas cylinder, which takes into account the possibility of organizing pressurization, as well as a drip fuel supply system
For heating small rooms, you can build a stove-potbelly stove, which lasts more than one year:https://aquatech.tomathouse.com/en/otoplenie/bani-i-garazh/burzhujka-na-otrabotannom-masle.html.
Although the device is not complicated, it is recommended that you use a number of rules when using it:
- To prevent oil from splashing out of the combustion chamber, do not fill the tank more than two-thirds.
- If hot working after ignition “boils”, you need to reduce the air supply using the adjustment flap.
- In order to maintain sufficient draft, the oil tank and chimney should be cleaned of impurities weekly.
- To remove soot, the upper part of the structure must be tapped.
Ovens for working out are deservedly popular among car owners, as well as in service stations, in small car services, etc. With their help, you can successfully heat small and medium-sized rooms.
There is no shortage of used oil at auto repair enterprises, but what about ordinary motorists? They are advised to acquire a suitable tank in which to collect the mining obtained in the summer. In winter, this fuel will be used. Those who do not have a car, but decided to acquire such a stove, should inquire about the presence of unnecessary mining at the service station. The employees of these enterprises are almost always ready to share the spent resource for free or at a symbolic price.
