Gas cylinder potbelly stove: an overview of horizontal and vertical structures

The onset of cold weather makes the heating issue very relevant. It is especially important for those rooms in which people are occasionally: utility room, garages, etc. It is very impractical to equip a stationary system here, and often impossible, but you can’t do without heating. Two options can be a solution: systems operating on electricity or on solid fuel. Among the second is an economical potbelly stove from a gas cylinder - even an inexperienced home master can assemble it with his own hands. Let's see in more detail how this is done.

The principle of operation of such a stove
This type of furnace is a practical solution for all kinds of unheated rooms, which occasionally need to be heated. Due to its design features, the potbelly stove very quickly warms up, which allows you to achieve a comfortable temperature with minimal time. However, it cools down just as quickly and this is its biggest drawback. You can deal with it by overlaying a brick with a stove, but it is imperative to leave a small gap between the masonry and the metal. Only in this case, the device will maintain a high heating rate, but it will cool longer.
The main structural element is the housing on which the doors are located through which fuel is put into the system. The system also includes a chimney and a blower. This is the name of the special hole for air that provides the combustion process. Quite often it is combined with the department where the ash is collected. It is best to equip another door here, it will be easier to clean the stove. The principle of the system is simple. Fuel is put in the furnace. When it is burned, heat is released, which heats the metal of the case. That, in turn, gives off heat to the air and very quickly heats the room. The chimney pipe removes combustion products harmful to humans from the premises.
A little nuance. If you make a chimney will be laid along the shortest path, then most of the heat will go out along with the smoke. This is very irrational, so you should equip a pipe with a broken shape. This will significantly increase the efficiency of the furnace. Practically everything that can burn can be used as fuel for the system. This can be firewood, coal, carpentry waste, old clothes, household garbage, etc. The attractiveness of the stove is the simplicity of its design and versatility, since the device can be used not only for heating, but also for cooking.
DIY instruction
For an experienced home master it will not be difficult to make a stove-potbelly stove. Begin by preparing a gas bottle for use. This is a mandatory procedure, otherwise the gas that most often remains in the container may explode from contact with the spark during cutting. First, unscrew the cylinder valve and let the remaining gas out. Then turn the container over and drain the condensate. It should be noted that it smells very unpleasant. Therefore, it is worth collecting it carefully in some kind of vessel. The smell of condensation that accidentally hits the floor or other surface disappears for a very long time.

Before starting work with the cylinder, it should be prepared. It is imperative to get rid of gas residues in the tank, otherwise it may explode during work
We install the cylinder vertically and fill it to the top with water. This is necessary so that the gas residues that remain inside are completely displaced by the liquid. Then turn the container on its side and completely drain the water. Now the cylinder can be subjected to any manipulations without fear. Here, for example, is disassembling and cutting:
Having prepared everything you need, you should determine the type of potbelly stove. It can be horizontal or vertical design.
Option # 1 - horizontal system
In this embodiment, the balloon is placed in a horizontal plane. First, cut off its upper part. Then install the grate in the tank. It is made of reinforcement. The rod is accurately bent by a "snake". Installation of grates is quite simple. They are installed in the tank and welded to it. Now let's get to the front. We take a sheet of steel and outline on it a contour of a circle with a diameter equal to the outer contour of the cylinder. Cut out the part. Then, inside the circle, we outline two rectangular holes. The first is intended for supplying fuel to the combustion chamber, the second - for blowing.
Using a chisel or grinder, cut out the intended holes. We weld the curtains to the finished cover and attach the doors to them. The latter should be glued along the contour with an asbestos-cement cord. We weld the prepared structure to the cylinder. The front of the potbelly stove is ready. Go to the back of the device. Here you need to equip the chimney. To do this, cut a hole equal in size to the diameter of the pipe used to remove smoke. We weld to it a chimney of the desired shape and size, made of a thick-walled pipe. The oven is ready.

A kind of potbelly stove, which suggests a horizontal arrangement of the body of the gas cylinder. Simple enough to manufacture design
Option # 2 - Vertical Design
When arranging such a design, the cylinder is located vertically. There are two ways to equip a system. The first involves a greater number of works related to cutting, but during installation there are fewer difficulties. When choosing this method, the grinder removes the upper part of the cylinder. The second method saves time, power and electrodes, but is extremely inconvenient. In this case, the upper part of the cylinder remains in place. In any case, we cut out a furnace hole of a sufficiently large size on the front of the future device. Below you need to arrange a smaller hole for blowing and cleaning the furnace from ash.
You can place the holes arbitrarily, as well as select sizes for them. The main thing is that two rectangular openings are located in the lower part of the case. Without them, the potbelly stove cannot function. Now you should prepare for installation the grate. They are made of reinforcing rods, which are bent in the form of a snake and are welded inside the case between rectangular holes. In the case of the first installation option, this operation is very easy, as the grill is lowered through the open top.In the second - it’s quite difficult, because the grate is inserted through the upper hole and held through the bottom, and this is extremely inconvenient.

The stove can be made of potbelly stove from a gas cylinder located vertically. Such a system involves two manufacturing methods. The top of the tank can either be cut for easy installation or not
After installing the grate, the curtains are welded to the holes for the doors. They need to be glued over with an asbestos-cement cord to ensure the necessary tightness, and put in place. Now you should make a hole for the chimney. There are two ways to do this. A central exhaust gas outlet and oxygen supply is assumed through an opening in the top cover of the device. The size of the hole should correspond to the diameter of the pipe to be used as a chimney. Side smoke exhaust and oxygen supply are also possible. In this case, the hole is made in the side of the housing. The knee is most often welded to it, however, direct output can also be arranged. The last stage is fixing the chimney of the desired configuration and length. If the top is cut off from the cylinder, we weld it into place.
Homemade potbelly stove is a very economical and quite effective solution for heating rarely used rooms. Deciding on its use, you need to remember that such a heater is potentially dangerous. It burns oxygen, so from time to time it is necessary to provide fresh air access to the room. In addition, all safety precautions necessary for handling open flame devices must be observed. In this case, there will be no security problems.
