What can be washed if there is no washing powder
Modern household chemicals have a highly specialized purpose: for mopping, dishes, washing. And it is right. Such products contain additives that increase the effectiveness of the fight against dirt in this direction. But basically, all detergents are designed to be cleaned and can be replaced if necessary.
Hand washing with inappropriate household appliances is safer than machine washing; use the machine with caution: increased foaming or the appearance of insoluble sediment on the walls - all this can lead to damage to the equipment. But hand washing has its drawbacks: too aggressive substances can cause not only allergic rashes, but also damage to the skin of the hands.
Table: Laundry Detergents
The tool used. | Soap preparation. | Recommendations for washing. |
Laundry soap | Based on any laundry soap, you can prepare a soap solution:
|
Laundry soap can be used for linen and cotton fabrics, it is more effective when washed in hot water. For wool and silk, this mixture is not suitable. Soda is bleach and is not recommended for washing colored items. The composition is suitable for hand washing, and for the automatic machine. But with its frequent use in the washing machine, it is necessary to control the presence of insoluble plaque on the walls of the drum or other details. You can remove it by running a high-temperature empty wash, after adding vinegar or citric acid to the cuvette. |
Baking soda | For hand washing: 10 g of powder per 1 liter of water, mix until the particles are completely dissolved. For the machine: 100 g of soda and 50 g of vinegar or citric acid are taken per tab, the components are added directly to the drum. |
Soda is not recommended for colored fabrics. Hand washing should be done with rubber gloves so as not to damage the hands. For a complete rinse of soda, it is better to use the additional rinse mode. |
Shampoo for washing your hair, shower gel, toilet liquid soap. |
A small amount is added to the basin with water. For washing, more transparent products are suitable with a thin consistency, since there are fewer additives in them. Do not use exfoliating gels and scrubs. |
They are used only for hand washing, as these products have increased foaming. Suitable for small dirt, complex stains can not be removed. Usually they are used to give freshness to delicate silk items or for woolen products. Cotton items do not wash well. |
Dishwashing liquid. | If there are old spots, they are pre-moistened with undiluted agent for 10-15 minutes. Then the thing is washed by hand, if necessary adding more soapy liquid. | Like shampoos, it is not used for automatic washing. It can be used for any tissue, but greasy spots are most effectively removed. |
Salt. | The solution for soaking is prepared from the condition: 1 tbsp. l salt on top of 1 liter of water. Stir the liquid until the salt is completely dissolved. | The salt is suitable for hand washing by soaking. Things for 1 hour are laid in the solution, then rinsed thoroughly. Linen and chintz fabrics are excellently washed with little soiling. It can be used for white and colored linen, the color of dyeing becomes brighter after such washing. |

In addition to the proposed methods, you can just wash the laundry in the machine without adding any funds. The purely mechanical effect of water will remove small impurities from clothing.
Reviews on the use of improvised laundry detergents
From my own experience, I can say that you can’t find a better laundry soap in this case. You need to grate it, or finely chop it with a knife and throw it directly into the drum. BUT! It is better to distribute it over all clothes, otherwise, if the soap is lying in a heap, it may clump together and there will be practically no effect. I tried to put in a container for powder, but from there the soap is poorly washed. This option is more environmentally friendly than powder, just forgotten.
Washed with dishwashing liquid, shower gel, shampoo with citric acid, everything is fine, things become soft even without any air conditioning
Washing powder can be successfully replaced with laundry soap and soda. Laundry soap is rubbed on a fine grater and baking soda or 1: 1 soda ash is added to it. You can add a couple drops of essential oil for aroma. When washing, you need to fill up directly in the tank of the machine. I can say that it erases much cleaner than some powders, and the clothes after such washing are pleasant to the touch. Try it, you won’t regret it!
Is dishwashing detergent suitable for washing? I guess, yes. I use such detergents for washing kitchen towels, if they are too greasy stains, since no powder does not remove them anyway. Well, or at least for preliminary soaking. The main thing is not to pour such a product into a washing machine, otherwise the foam will be washed out and then tormented. Just soak first, then rub the place where there are stains, then rinse. And only after that it is already loaded from the machine with ordinary powder. From my own experience I can say that the method is not bad, especially with regard to light fabrics, although it is quite laborious.
Folk Laundry Detergents
Our ancestors perfectly washed clothes by hand without the use of washing powder and often in cold water. There are many different means to make things clean and without household chemicals.
Potatoes
When washing with potatoes, the color of the material is well preserved.
Detergent preparation technology looks like this:
- Rub 1.5 kg of raw potatoes on a fine grater.
- We give the mass to stand and express the juice.
- Dilute the liquid with hot water (1 tbsp.) And beat in foam.
- Foam is used for washing by hand.
Mustard powder
Dry mustard can be used for both hand and machine wash. But you can not wash in hot water, as mustard loses its soap properties. This method is not suitable for cotton products.
Preparation of soap solution for hand washing:
- Stir 20 g of dry mustard in 1 liter of water.
- Allow the liquid to infuse for several hours.
- Pour the clean part of the infusion without sediment into a separate container (can be filtered through gauze).
- The resulting liquid is used for washing; with severe contamination, the solution changes several times.
- The precipitate remaining after filtering can be poured again with less water and insisted to obtain a soap solution again.
When washing in an automatic machine, 50 g of powder is poured directly into the laundry tub. If there are spots, they are pre-smeared with mustard gruel.
Mylianca officinalis (soap root)
This herbaceous plant grows in the European part of Russia, it can also be purchased at a pharmacy, as soap dish is used in folk medicine to treat a number of diseases.
The solution of this plant is more suitable for washing silk and wool. Cooking method:
- Divide 50 g of soapwort roots into small pieces.
- Pour 0.5 liters of boiling water and insist for a day, stirring occasionally.
- Put the infusion on a slow fire and boil for at least 1 hour.
- Strain.
The resulting liquid is added to a basin with water, whipped until foam appears and used for washing.
In case of severe contamination, it is recommended to change the water twice, in this case the soap solution is previously divided into two portions.

Wood ash
Only ash from deciduous trees (linden birch) is suitable; impurities from burning garbage are not allowed.
This product is washed by boiling, so it is suitable only for fabrics that withstand 100 ºC.
Mode of application:
- 120 ml of ash are taken per kilogram of laundry.
- Ash powder is placed in a dense tissue bag (you can use several layers of gauze).
- Linen and ash are placed in the boiling tank, poured with water and put on a slow fire.
- The linen should be boiled for at least 1 hour, then it is rinsed several times and dried.
A soap solution can also be made on the basis of ash:
- 1 kg of powder is poured into 3 liters of water and insisted for at least 3 days.
- The upper pure fraction of the infusion is an alkaline solution for boiling.
- It is drained or aspirated (for example, using a pear).
- For washing, the solution is diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10.
The lack of washing powder is not an obstacle to the control of contamination on clothing. But if you are not an opponent of household chemicals, it is still better to use products created specifically for washing. It is more convenient, comfortable, safe and effective.
