Dry closet for a summer residence with your own hands - step by step instructions for creating a peat variant

There is no doubt that it is impossible to do without a toilet in the country. However, difficulties arise in the construction of such structures far from civilization. Connection to local treatment facilities is excluded due to their remoteness. Therefore, you have to build a toilet, relying only on your own strength, because an autonomous sewage system is not affordable for everyone. There are two ways out: to build an ordinary closet with a cesspool or to buy a dry closet. The second option is much more environmentally friendly and has a minimum of disadvantages. However, it will cost more. And why not build a dry closet for a summer residence with your own hands, saving at the same time?

What are the designs of dry closets?

The simplest dry closet consists of two combined containers. The upper one is the receiving department and the lower one for waste collection and disposal. To decompose the products of human life faster, use various filler compositions. In addition to accelerating the processing process, they destroy odors. Dry closets are:

  • electric;
  • liquid;
  • peat.

Now let's figure out which one you can build yourself.

The design of the electric dry closet is very complex, in addition, it requires power supply to operate. Why do you need extra waste?

Electric dry closet

The electric dry closet has a complex structure and needs to be connected to the mains

To use liquid toilets will require a lot of water. We’ll have to think about how to drain excess fluid, and there will be a lot of it. The price of biological products that are used as a filler also "bites".

Liquid Dry closet

The use of a liquid dry closet leads to a large consumption of water. In addition, he needs to drain excess fluid

And what is needed for a peat dry closet? The idea of installing such toilets is not new. Previously, something like this was called powder-closet. What was he like? The main detail of this design was a waste collection tank. After relieving the need, it was necessary to “mask” everything with powder. Sawdust, dry earth or ash were used for it.

Do-it-yourself peat dry closet

A peat toilet doesn’t need a lot of water and an electrical connection

A similar technology is being applied now. Peat only acts as a powder or filler. Manufactured structures have two combined containers. One is storage for waste, the other is for storing filler. For home-made dry closets, two separate containers are often used. In addition to the simplicity of the design, the peat dry closet has other advantages:

  • does not pollute the environment;
  • works without water;
  • low price for consumables;
  • obtaining high-quality natural fertilizer.

So, we decided: we are building a peat dry closet on our own.

Where is it better to install it?

Having decided to make a peat dry closet with your own hands, the first thing to find out where it can be built. Since the cesspool is not included in its structure, groundwater pollution is excluded. The presence of odor is negligible. Especially if the toilet is done according to the rules.

To build such a structure in sight is also not worth it. Of course, knowing how to make a dry closet according to all the rules, you can install it in the house. The main thing is not to forget about ventilation and drainage. So, before choosing a mounting location, you need to consider all these points.

How to build a seat with capacity?

The simplest dry closet is a seat with a capacity installed in a separate building. For it, a storage capacity of 20 liters is required, from a material not subject to corrosion. It is desirable that it be in the form of a bucket. In addition to capacity you will need:

  • square bar (5: 5 cm);
  • plywood or chipboard 1.5 cm thick.

As well as tools:

  • roulette;
  • jigsaw (preferably electric);
  • a hammer;
  • screwdriver.

First, the necessary workpieces are cut. 4 legs with a height of 35 cm are made from a bar. They are prepared from plywood:

  • 2 rectangles - 52:30 cm, for the side walls;
  • 2 rectangles - 45:30 cm, for the front and back walls;
  • 1 rectangle - 45:48 cm, for the cover;
  • 1 bar - 45: 7, for loops.

When everything is prepared, you can collect. Legs are screwed to the short side of the side parts. They will protrude on one side by 5 cm.

Do-it-yourself dry closet

From below the legs will protrude 5 cm from the edge

Then the back and front walls are screwed to the legs, forming a box as a result.

The box must have right angles without distortions

A bar is screwed to the back side, over the legs.

Homemade dry closet with screwed strap

To hang the hinges, you first need to screw the bar over the legs

On it, with the help of hinges, a lid is hung.

Screwing the cover of a homemade dry closet

Before attaching the hinges, attach the lid to the box and mark the places for screwing the screws with an awl

Now you need to make a hole.

So that it strictly matches the size of the container, the bucket is turned upside down, placed on the lid in the middle and a circle of the desired diameter is outlined.

Before making a dry closet, a hole is made

To make the hole fit the size of the container, you need to draw it by turning the bucket upside down

The hole is cut with a jigsaw strictly on the mark.

How to make a hole for a dry closet with your own hands

Cutting the hole with a jigsaw, you need to grind all wooden surfaces

After that, the wooden surface is ground and coated with an antiseptic. To give the product a more attractive look, you can paint it, varnish it, beat it with linoleum. This is at your discretion.

An overview of the main antiseptics is presented in the following article:https://aquatech.tomathouse.com/en/kanalizaciya/yamy/bakterii-dlya-tualeta-na-dache.html

Dry closet operation rules

At the end of all work, the design must be checked. Before use, a container is inserted inside the box, an ordinary toilet seat is attached from above, and a peat mixture is poured onto the bottom.

Ready-made home-made dry closet

To prevent odors from spreading, the dry closet seat must close tightly

A container with peat is installed next to which a scoop or a spatula is placed. Everything, a home-made dry closet is ready for use. It remains to instruct everyone on the rules for using it.

DIY peat dry closet

Next to the storage tank, a filler tank is installed in which a scoop or spatula is placed

You can, for example, hang a sign with a reminder on the door of this content: "Before leaving the solitude, do not forget to sprinkle with peat what you left." Or something similar. And be sure to mention that the seat cover is always closed.

Is drainage needed for this design?

In order for the liquid that enters the tank toilets to be completely adsorbed, a lot of peat is needed.This is expensive and inconvenient, because the waste will have to be disposed of more often. When using the usual filler rate, the liquid partially evaporates, is partially absorbed by peat, and the rest should be removed through drainage.

DIY made toilet drain

To drain from the drainage pipe, you can make a collector from a leaky bucket filled with sawdust with peat

What is needed for this? Two containers of different sizes, so that one fits snugly into the other, and there is little space between them below. The bottom of the smaller tank should have small openings to allow fluid to leak into the larger tank. To remove it, a hole is made on the side into which a drainage hose is inserted and brought out. For the liquid obtained at the outlet, a small collector can be built.

Proper waste disposal

You need to be able to properly dispose of waste so that the result is a good fertilizer. As the storage tank is full, it must be cleaned. But this does not mean that you need to wait until it is typed to the brim. Not only is this not aesthetically pleasing, a full bucket is hard to endure physically. The more frequent the cleaning, the better.

The contents of the dry closet are taken out on a compost heap. But do not expect that there will be no smell at all. Bacteria need time to fully recycle waste. Therefore, it is preferable to do a compost pile away from home, and sprinkle “fresh” waste with dry earth or leaves. Even better if a container with a lid is used for it. Having emptied the dry closet, it is advisable to wash and dry it. Therefore, it does not hurt to have another one for a shift.

Cabin for homemade dry closet

Of course, if you wish, you can install a dry closet with your own hands and in the house. But for this you need a separate room with ventilation.

If more than one person uses the toilet, a drain hose must be installed.

Cabin device for a homemade dry closet

A properly arranged peat dry closet should have good ventilation

Those who cannot afford it will have to build outdoor toilet. The house for him can be made of brick, wood or any material left after the construction of the house. Instead of a wooden box for the seat, you can build a whole pedestal with two holes. And at the back or side of the house, attach a small door to remove the container.

If you do not want to spend time building a dry closet, it is recommended to purchase it. This material will help to make a choice:https://aquatech.tomathouse.com/en/kanalizaciya/postrojki/kakoj-vybrat-biotualet-dlya-dachi.html

      The idea of such a toilet came to me when I found a small peat bog in our forest. It is not particularly difficult to get peat, but it is not necessary to make a lot of it. Like Mikhail, who commented on the article above, I made a toilet in the country without knowing some of the subtleties, now I will make changes. Well, I, as an economic person, strive so that nothing would be wasted in vain. I use waste products properly. Any organic matter is suitable for fertilizer. I put the contents of the septic tank into the compost pit, with waste from the garden. In spring there will be a great humus. I think everything should be done wisely, including such a thing as a toilet.

      Our cottage is very many years old, but due to the very close distance of the cottages to each other, there is no way to dig an elementary hole and build a typical village toilet. Therefore, we settled on a peat dry closet. We decided that this is the most budgetary and simplest solution to our problem. When they thought about building it on their own, they built a brick extension on the border with their neighbors, away from home. They built on the principle written in the article, but did not take into account the drainage system. Now I understand why it was necessary to use so much peat and often change the capacity. Be sure to fix this oversight.
