How to make and install a toilet for a free-standing summer toilet

A smart owner begins the construction of a country house with a toilet. Independent construction work or with the help of a team will not be comfortable if there is no “convenience” necessary for every normal person, where a neat summer toilet and a washstand with a bar of soap are located.

Is the “outdoor” toilet really necessary?
A bathroom located outside the house is not considered the most prestigious option, especially if it is supposed to use the cottage in the winter. Even for a purely summer cottage, an option with a warm toilet located directly in the house and equipped with a reliable septic tank is increasingly being chosen. And at the time of construction, you can buy or rent a compact plastic closet dry closet.

The toilet, made in the form of a wooden booth, can look very beautiful and even stylish in the landscape design of a summer cottage
However, to make a separate toilet on the site still makes sense. Take a look at the back of this prosaic, but necessary for life medal. Country toilet:
- allows you to get a certain amount of valuable organic fertilizer - compost;
- it is convenient during the reception of guests in the open air (they do not need to go "on demand" to the house);
- helps to relieve the "warm" toilet in the house with a large number of residents.
A neat wooden house with a thoughtful design can even decorate the surrounding landscape. Its internal filling should also be made as convenient as possible, especially the main part - the toilet for giving.
What are summer toilets?
Not so long ago, the only solution for a wooden booth knocked out of boards was either a hole in the wooden flooring, or a slightly more convenient wooden chair: an elevation with a hole, which is sometimes called a counter. Practice has shown that from the point of view of comfort, both of these options are not very practical.
Note! Plastic dry closets are much more convenient and no hassle with them: you just need to choose and pay for the appropriate model, and the supplier company can take care of the installation and maintenance. However, this pleasure is not cheap, but you will have to say goodbye to the opportunity to get nutritious compost.

The compact plastic toilet for summer cottages, which are equipped with bio-toilets, is very convenient, but the owners of the site will have to reckon with the constant additional costs of its maintenance
An excellent way out of their situation can be a regular toilet, which is mounted directly above the cesspool. Another option, when a septic tank is arranged instead of a cesspool, is also quite popular. In a house equipped with a water supply and sewage system, making such a toilet is not so difficult. You need to buy a toilet with a tank and connect it. But as a rule, they don’t bring water to freestanding country toilets.
It should be noted that a conventional floor earthenware toilet has significant physical weight. A wooden plank floor may just fall beneath it. This option is more appropriate in capital structures with concrete floors.
Fortunately, neat toilets for the country toilet, made of plastic, appeared on sale. They come in different colors, models of dark shades are popular. Plastic is strong enough to support the weight of a seated person, and the product weighs not so much. More and more country toilets are equipped with such beautiful and comfortable garden toilets.
A few recommendations for creating a toilet in the country are contained in the video:
How to make and install a toilet yourself?
The easiest option for installing a country toilet is the manufacture of a so-called wooden counter. Usually its height varies between 30-40 cm to sit comfortably. In the upper part of the counter you need to make an oval hole, which then install a regular plastic circle with a lid.

Garden toilets, sometimes called "counters", look quite aesthetically pleasing, but they do not always meet the needs of summer residents and gardeners
Tip. If the wooden toilet is located above the cesspool, care should be taken about ventilation. To do this, outside the toilet, it is necessary to provide for the installation of a ventilation pipe made of metal or plastic. An acceptable pipe height is 3-4 meters and a diameter of about 100 mm. Unpleasant odors will be displayed outside and will not disturb the residents of the house.
Homemade galvanized steel version
Craftsmen tirelessly seek opportunities to make an easy and convenient country toilet out of improvised means and materials. We suggest you consider the option of a home-made design, which is made of a galvanized steel sheet. The order of work is as follows:
- Rivet an oval cylinder with a cross section of 300X350 mm from the galvanized sheet with a margin of height.
- Cut the top of the structure with a "daisy".

To make a comfortable country toilet with your own hands, you need to roll a sheet of galvanized or stainless steel in the form of a cylinder and rivet it
- Cut a seat of suitable configuration from plywood 8-10 mm thick.
- Fasten the plywood seat to the metal daisy.
Secure the structure to the wooden base of the toilet above the cesspool or receptacle.

The top of the cylinder is cut in the form of a “camomile”, to the metal petals of which a seat is cut, cut from a sufficiently thick piece of plywood
For the manufacture of the toilet seat, it is recommended to use a plywood sheet with a thickness of about eight to ten millimeters in order to provide the structure with sufficient strength.

A structure made of galvanized iron sheet and plywood seat must be securely fixed above the cesspool or receptacle opening
To minimize contact between the contents of the cesspool and the flies, you can attach a plastic toilet circle with a lid to the plywood seat or make a suitable lid yourself.
Note. Some craftsmen consider galvanized steel not strong enough for such needs and recommend replacing it with stainless steel.
Plastic construction step-by-step installation
When installing a plastic toilet in the country, a problem such as fixing the structure over the receiving tank may occur. If a plastic barrel is used in this quality, then the hole in it will be round, while plastic toilets are made with an oval hole.
To combine these two designs, galvanized sheet steel can be used. It is done like this:
- A sheet of galvanized metal must be rolled up, giving it a conical shape.
- Lower the cone into the barrel with the bottom.
- The upper part of the cone is freely fixed on the base of the toilet floor. The diameter of the upper hole of the cone should be larger than the oval hole made on the bottom of the plastic toilet.
Tip: It is recommended to fix galvanized steel without tension, so that in winter it can more easily withstand temperature deformations. Which is exposed to both metal and wooden floor boards.
- Treat the joints between the galvanized iron sheet and the take-up barrel and floorboards using automotive mastic.
- Make a plank toilet flooring.
- Install a plastic toilet on the floor.
- Circle the contour of the hole required for the plastic toilet from the inside and cut this hole along the contour with a jigsaw.
- From a sheet of galvanized steel, a strip 200 mm wide is used, which is used to finish the sawed hole, the edges of the metal should be bent.
- Now you need to make mounting holes, attach the toilet to the floor, placing a transport tape under it, and process the mounting points from the inside with mastic.
Using the principles outlined above, you can make a convenient toilet for a freestanding toilet or correctly fix a ready-made model so that at any time of the year the summer cottage is truly comfortable and cozy.
