Can the intake pipe diameter be smaller than the pump inlet?

Is it possible that the diameter of the intake pipe is smaller than the inlet of the surface pump?

Hello, Tatyana.

The manufacturer always indicates the diameter of the pipe for connecting the intake pipe and the length of the suction line is not at all accidental - these characteristics are directly dependent on each other. It is possible to reduce the cross-section of the pipe in the supply section, but such a solution will increase its hydraulic resistance, which means that the unit will be able to lift water from a shallower depth than in the case of the recommended pipeline.

Understanding this process "on the fingers" is very simple. Imagine that the usual straw in your cocktail was replaced with a thin straw - it will become more difficult to drink, will it? It will also be more difficult for the pump, and therefore it will be necessary to reduce the length of the intake line. In conclusion, I would like to summarize: if a decrease in the suction capacity, and, therefore, a decrease in the height of the water rise for your case is allowed, then such a replacement is quite possible - the pump will not suffer from this.
